Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) is a serious and potentially life threatening condition that affects a very small percentage of the general population. Primary pulmonary hypertension is a rare disease that has no known cause and results in the progressive narrowing of the blood vessels of the lungs. There are no known cures for PPH, but treatment for the cardiovascular condition is improving.

However, since the introduction of fen-phen into the American market in 1995, the number of cases of PPH has risen dramatically. Fen-phen was first introduced in 1996 and hailed a "miracle cure" for weight loss, but patients soon began suffering the serious medical side effects, including PPH, that fen-phen directly causes.  Although fen-phen is no longer available in the U.S., individuals that used the prescription weight loss drug fen-phen are at a considerably higher risk for developing the serious medical condition PPH.

Fen-Phen and Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

The August 26, 1996 publication of The New England Journal of Medicine reported the results of the International Primary Pulmonary Hypertension study (Abenhaim, Appetite Suppressant Drugs and The Risk of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, N. Eng. J. Med. 1996, 335; 609-16.) entitled "Appetite Suppressants and the Risk of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension." This study concluded that fen-phen and other fenfluramine-based diet drugs increased the risk of Pulmonary Hypertension by a multiple of more than thirty (30) times normal. The manufacturers and distributors of these diet drugs were aware of the results of the International Primary Pulmonary Hypertension study by at least November of 1995, but did not warn the public or the physicians of the risk of contracting Pulmonary Hypertension. Pulmonary Hypertension is a serious disorder which is often fatal.
